Get past the first line in Only The Good Die Young by Iron Maiden and you're off. I've been listening to a lot of Maiden in the past year-plus. Not sure what possessed me to get Brave New World in Dec 13, but now that I think of it, it's probably b/c I was so blown away by Gamma Ray and Helloween that I reckoned I had to go just one more step backward to see where it really all comes from. One could argue that it's Sabbath, but Maiden is faster and more upbeat and had a singer who could actually sing, so I'd argue that Maiden is the pioneering Power Metal band. The one thing I get tired of with them, though, is that there's not enough songs/topics from their own collective viewpoint. For every "Wasted Years" there's 6 more songs about some ancient killer or king. Not a bad thing, but I think that's why I prefer Gamma Ray and Helloween (not to say that they also didn't have those types of songs but there's more of a first-person feel to them). Bruce Dickinson's post-Maiden output in the late 90s rocks. Darkside of Aquarius. (in the Metrotech tunnel) I think more of his own thoughts came through on his first 3 solo albums and once Accident came out he had to revert to telling fantastical stories. Although I will say that his mellower tunes are perfect for commutes ("Navigate the Seas of the Sun," "Omega," "Arc of Space," and even "Change of Heart.")
The street ride was pretty uneventful save for a cab driver who cut me off on Ashland (while I was in the bike lane) next to the hospital. He was looking for someone/something and I guess he didn't care who was right behind him. I flipped him off with my puffy glove digit and that was all. There was also some people crossing the street to go in to my old building (4 Metro). There was no car behind me and they see me but couldn't/wouldn't stop so I had to warn them in a gravelly voice to "Just wait a second." It'll be much worse in Manhattan.
Just some paperwork and boring data entry shite today. Looking forward to a good possible "last meal" with Hayter and Binder, though. Hope we get a picture.
Hitting gym tonite. Donating blood tomorrow. Missing Chickie and the Lizard.
Thank you for reading.
Jump The Gun - Metal Church (on the bridge)
Anything My Mama Don't Like - Helloween - (it actually froze just as the guitars kicked in)
